Programme summary

This programme is aimed at students who wish to develop a career in the areas of data science and related disciplines. This programme is a good fit for you if you are interested in the analysis of real-world datasets, how they are collected, and how they can be explored using the latest in state-of-the-art statistical or machine learning based models. The key aim is to answer challenging questions of interest about populations, be it the customer base of an organisation such as a bank, or exploring manufacturing processes in pharmaceutical companies to identify efficiencies or sources of system errors. An interest in developing or strengthening coding skills, particularly in R or Python, is a key prerequisite to entering the programme.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree (NFQ Level 8) with at least a second-class honour, grade 2 (2:2) in Mathematics, Statistics, Physics or a relevant quantitative discipline with a strong mathematical or statistical component. You must have and will only be considered if you have a strong foundation in mathematics from a prior programme of study, where they have excelled in their mathematical subjects. The university may shortlist and invite you to an interview. Previous experience of statistical programming is an advantage but is not required.
